The University of Virginia Department of Music offers a wide variety of opportunities to all university students interested in studying music and sound. Students can explore jazz, African genres, European art musics, computer music, hip-hop or other popular musics, and a range of other world and folk musics. 

Graduate Programs
GRADUATE PROGRAMS

UVA Music offers graduate study leading to the Ph.D. in Music, with specializations in Critical Studies in Music and Sound (CSMS) or Composition and Computer Technologies (CCT). The faculty provides mentoring in all aspects of music scholarship and composition, including publication, teaching, performance, technology, grant writing, and conference presentation.

Offering a spectrum of performance opportunities, from jazz, bluegrass, and hip-hop to early music, choral, and orchestral performance, the performance program strives to appeal to a wide range of student musical interests and talents, while reaching out to the public and the community in a myriad of ways.

The Department of Music produces over 120 concerts annually, bringing the innovation and diversity of our academic mission to the public. Our concerts are a vital part of the creative arts programming at the University of Virginia and in the Charlottesville community.
