On Saturday, November 1st at 1pm, we invite all cellists and those who love cello music to come watch renowned cellist and pedagogue Dana McComb lead a masterclass for University of Virginia cello students. UVA cellists Shruthy Rajkumar, Elliot Renenger, and Cameron Spears will be performing music by Bach, Cassadó, and Ligeti. This session will be held in Old Cabell Hall room 107, and is open to all. Professor McComb currently teaches at Virginia Commonwealth University and has held faculty positions at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, as well as at Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory.


Dana McComb, Cello
Canadian-born cellist Dana McComb is an accomplished performer, educator, and arts leader whose career spans over 30 years. She has appeared as a chamber musician, recitalist, and orchestral player across North America, performing with the Richmond Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Winnipeg Symphony, Sacramento Symphony, and others. In 2013, she was featured in the world premiere of Chasing Cello with the Richmond Ballet, and her performances can be heard on the soundtracks for The Music Man, Sunken Cities (Discovery Channel), and various television commercials.

Ms. McComb holds both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Cello Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Irene Sharp and Bonnie Hampton. She also holds an Associate Diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto. Her festival appearances include the Banff Chamber Music Academy, Kneisel Hall, National
Orchestral Institute, Bowdoin, and Meadowmount, and she was awarded the top prize in Chamber Music at the Canadian Music Competition.

An avid teacher, Ms. McComb has held faculty positions at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto and the Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory, and is currently on faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University. Additionally, she directs the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra Honors Program, an advanced chamber music ensemble within the Richmond Symphony’s education division.

In addition to her work as a performer and educator, Ms. McComb serves as Managing Director of the Belvedere Series, where she brings artistic vision and a deep commitment to community engagement to one of the region’s leading chamber music organizations. Ms. McComb maintains a vibrant private studio in Richmond, VA, where many of her students have earned recognition at the state, regional, and national levels of the MTNA competition. Her educational initiatives—including the long-running Cellopalooza and Theory is Fun RVA— reflect her commitment to inclusive and creative music education.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda. Parking is available in the central grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner. Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
